THE SIX YOUNG MEN WHO LOST THEIR LIVES IN THE FIRST WORLD WAR AND WHO ARE COMMEMORATED ON THE WAR MEMORIAL IN NETTLEDEN.

ARTHUR CRIPPS

Private 27364, 2nd battalion the Northamptonshire Regiment. Killed in action Thursday 16th August 1917 in France and Flanders. Age 20. He was the son of John and Elizabeth Cripps. His father was a gamekeeper. At the time of the 1901 census the family was living at the Round House, Gadebridge, Hemel Hempstead, which was Arthur’s birthplace. At the time of the 1911 census the family was living at The Meadows, Potten End where John was still a gamekeeper. At the age of 13 Arthur was working as a cowboy. He was the second son of 8 children. At the time of Arthur’s death his mother was a widow and living at 15, Frithsden. Commemorated on TYNE COT MEMORIAL, Zonnebeke, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. 

REGINALD OAKENS

Private 19892, 6th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment. Killed in action Thursday 4th May 1916 in France & Flanders. Born Potten End, enlisted Hertford. Son of Mr A. Oakens, a farm labourer of 8, Frithesden. Reginald was also a farm labourer. Buried in BIENVILLERS MILITARY CEMETERY, Pas de Calais, France.

ARTHUR WILLIAM GOODEDGE

Private 13706, 7th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment . Died of wounds Wednesday 19th July 1916 in France & Flanders. Age 28. Born in Berkhamsted (Nettleden), enlisted Hertford, resident Boxmoor at time of enlistment. Husband of Esther (nee Killick) Goodedge, of 15 St Margarets.  Buried in DIVE COPSE BRITISH CEMETERY, Somme, France. Arthur William was brought up by his grandparents in no.15 Nettleden. In the 1901 census he was a house domestic, in 1911 he was an agricultural labourer. He married in the June quarter 1911.

JOHN WILSON

Private 19834, 6th Battallion, Bedfordshire Regiment. Killed in action Wednesday 9th August 1916 in France & Flanders. Enlisted Hertford, resident and born Frithsden, c.1893. In 1911 census he is listed as groom, gardener, living at 12, Frithesden. . Buried in CATERPILLAR VALLEY CEMETERY, LONGUEVAL, Somme, Frances. John was the younger brother of Augustus.

AUGUSTUS E WILSON

Sergeant 14499, 7th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment. Died of wounds Tuesday 14th August 1917 in France & Flanders. Born and resident Great Berkhamsted (Frithesden) enlisted Hertford. Buried in BRANDHOEK NEW MILITARY CEMETERY, Ieper,West-Vlaanderen. He was born c 1890 and in 1911 census he was a groom-gardener, living at 12, Frithsden., son of Edwin (agricultural labourer) and Elizabeth Wilson.

BERT SUMMERFIELD (FREDERICK BERTIE)

Sergeant 51611, 1st Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action Tuesday 16th April 1918 in France and Flanders. Age 24, born Berkhamsted , enlisted Watford, resident Frithsden. Formerly 15297, Bedfordshire Regiment. Commemorated on TYNE COT MEMORIAL, Zonnebeke, West Vlaanderen, Belgium. Son of Walter (farm labourer) and Sarah  of 16, Frithsden. Bertie was a house boy (domestic) in 1911 census.
